Polarisation-dependent Signatures of Ships in Envisat Ap Mode Data

چکیده
The ENVISAT ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) AP (Alternating Polarisation) mode provides a new opportunity for spaceborne monitoring of vessel traffic and fishing activities. A series of data has been collected and analysed over Canadian and Norwegian waters, as well as other locations of opportunity. Three vessels were imaged during a Canadian trial and an oil production vessel in the Norne field has been imaged with various ASAR beams and polarisations to study the polarisation-dependent signatures of known ships. Cross-polarised data give better contrast for automated detection compared to co-polarised data, especially when the incidence angle is small.

Snow Classification Algorithm for Envisat Asar
Capabilities and methods for snow mapping in mountainous areas using the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) on board of ENVISAT were investigated. For algorithm development the backscattering signatures of snow covered and snow free surfaces in Alpine valleys and on mountain slopes were studied with ASAR data of different look angles and polarizations in comparison with field measurements...
متن کاملSar Processing Algorithms for Envisat Asar Image Mode and Alternating Polarization Mode in the Kspt Envisat Asar Processor
ABSTRACT: This paper describes the Extended Exact Transfer Function (EETF) algorithm used in the Kongsberg Spacetec (KSPT) ENVISAT ASAR processor, in addition to RADARSAT and ERS SAR processors from KSPT. This processor is required to handle and process data from image mode (IM), alternating polarization (AP) mode and wide swath (WS) mode. IM and AP mode are both processed using the EETF algori...
متن کاملShip Detection with Envisat's Alternating Polarization Mode
Work partly sponsored by the European Commission under the 5 Framework Program, contract EVG2-CT-2002-20002 Abstract A ship detection algorithm is developed that uses Envisat ASAR imagery in alternating polarisation mode. From airborne data it is shown that of the two copolarisations, HH is preferred over VV because of a larger ship-to-clutter ratio. Combining the HH and HV images of alternatin...
متن کاملMulti-mode SAR Interferometry Processing Research and Implementation
Current operation mode of SAR can be roughly divided into two types: strip-map mode and burst mode. The most conventional mode is strip-map mode, in which the swath width is quite limited. The other type is burst mode, which is an active option to overcome this limitation by cyclically scanning several subswaths, known as ScanSAR. In addition, Envisat ASAR has another type of burst mode, that i...
متن کاملGeometric Validation of Low and High-resolution Asar Imagery
We present issues and solutions concerning the calibration and validation of ENVISAT ASAR image products – both their geometry and radiometry are investigated. Concerning geometric calibration, the slant range products (IMS, APS) offer the best available resolution. We tabulate differences between measured (in image products) and predicted (via geodetic position, precise state vectors, and rang...
